Brewer Science Earns GreenCircle Certification for Zero Waste to Landfill

February 25, 2016 – Rolla & Vichy, MO – Brewer Science is pleased to announce its achievement of Zero Waste to Landfill Certification. Brewer Science has successfully completed an in-depth audit, which took a detailed look at the disposal of waste materials at the Rolla and Vichy locations. As a result, Brewer Science has earned third-party certification from GreenCircle Certified, LLC (GreenCircle), which has certified that the Rolla and Vichy Brewer Science locations contribute zero waste to landfills.

The certification issued by GreenCircle is valid through 2016. Brewer Science remains committed to a robust environmental management system with the objective of preventing pollution of the environment and providing a healthy, safe, and secure workplace. You can view the certification in GreenCircle’s Certified Product Database.

In 2015, Brewer Science added “Big Blue,” a large compactor that is used to collect items normally headed to the landfill. The compactor will prevent tons of waste materials from going to the landfill each year. Waste in “Big Blue” is taken to a Covanta waste-to-energy facility where the waste is combusted to produce steam and electricity. The implementation of the “Big Blue” compactor in combination with Brewer Science’s recycling initiatives enabled the Rolla and Vichy facilities to achieve Zero Waste to Landfill status. Brewer Science has a long history of being committed to responsible waste management. In 2002, Brewer Science began a mini-bin recycling program, which has resulted in recycling approximately 538 tons of waste.

In addition to successfully managing its own waste streams, Brewer Science has continued a partnership with the community by helping stakeholders properly dispose of waste and adopting surrounding streets in our industrial park. By working with the City of Rolla, the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the Meramec Regional Planning Commission, and the Phelps County Commission, Brewer Science provides area residents with community collections that have enabled Phelps County to properly dispose of almost 811,000 pounds of waste over the past 11 years. This partnership has contracted disposal companies and provided volunteers who collected from area residents appliances, electronics, and tires that would have otherwise been disposed of in a landfill.
