2006 American Forest & Paper Association Business Leadership Recycling Award

Apr 12, 2006

WASHINGTON, DC, April 12, 2006 - The American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) today announced that Brewer Science, Inc. of Rolla, Missouri has received the 2006 AF&PA Business Leadership Recycling Award in the large business category.  The award recognizes an outstanding paper business recycling program in a business with more than 150 employees.

In April 2002, Brewer Science decided to significantly expand their recycling efforts.  After a successful pilot program, desk-side recycling centers were introduced company-wide.  As a result of the program, more than 15 tons of paper and 55 tons of cardboard were recovered for recycling in 2005.  The most recent audit validates the effort: less than 10 percent of the company's garbage consists of recyclable materials. The cost of waste disposal per employee has dropped 32 percent since the inception of the program.

Brewer Science has shared their recycling program with the local community by making presentations at the local Chamber of Commerce, hospital and schools.  A strong alliance has also been forged with the University of Missouri-Rolla, with whom they partner to host Earth Day activities for the community with a focus on recycling.

The AF&PA Recycling Awards were created to recognize outstanding individual, business, community and school paper recycling efforts.  In 2005, a record-high 51.5 percent of the paper consumed in the U.S. was recovered for recycling.  The paper industry has set an ambitious goal of 55 percent recovery by 2012.  It is only through the continued efforts of the millions of Americans who recycle at home, work and school that this goal will be achieved.
