Brewer Science and SouthWest NanoTechnologies Announce $6.5M NIST TIP Award to Produce Low-Cost, High-Quality Metallic and Semiconducting Single-Wall Carbon Nanotube Inks
Brewer Science,® Inc., and SouthWest NanoTechnologies, Inc. (SWeNT), announced that they have received a $6.5M award under NIST"™s Technology Innovation Program (TIP). The funding is in support of research and development programs that focus upon methodologies to attain the cost-effective production of high-purity, high-quality metallic and semiconducting carbon nanotube (CNT) inks. These advancements will enable production of a wide variety of high-performing electronic devices incorporating CNTs.
SWeNT, a leading manufacturer of single-wall and specialty multi-wall CNTs, and Brewer Science, the leading producer of CNT inks for electronics applications, will team up to develop superior CNTs and improved inks on a commercial scale. These new products will support a wide variety of applications including high-performance optical devices, photovoltaic cells, batteries, supercapacitors, lighting products, flexible electronic devices, and sensors.
"We are honored to receive this award, and applaud NIST for supporting practical research in advanced materials," says Dr. Terry Brewer, President and CEO of Brewer Science. "CNT inks and films are poised to enable several important new technologies that address national needs, and we are very pleased to have our development efforts supported and recognized. SWeNT is the leader in SWCNT technology and production capability, and we are proud to have them as our partner in this project."
"We are extremely grateful to NIST," says SWeNT CEO David Arthur, "and feel fortunate to have Brewer Science as our partner in this work. Brewer Science has pioneered the use of CNTs in semiconductor applications, and the company"™s capabilities in the purification, separation, and dispersion of CNTs make them the ideal partner for us in tandem pursuit of CNT goals. Working together, with this support from NIST, we expect great advancements in the adoption of CNT applications."
TIP supports, promotes, and accelerates innovation in the United States through high-risk, high-reward research in areas of critical national need.
SouthWest NanoTechnologies (SWeNT) is a privately held specialty chemical company that manufactures high-quality single-wall and specialty multi-wall carbon nanotubes for a range of products and applications. SWeNT employs its proprietary CoMoCAT® process to tailor CNT materials to meet customer performance needs, in commercial quantities. SWeNT was created in 2001 to spin off nanotube research developed at the University of Oklahoma. For more information, please visit www.swentnano.com.
