Brewer Science Inspires Future Entrepreneurs Through MSU’s Missouri Innovation Academy
Students Experience Technology ‘Boot Camp’ at Brewer Science
July 2, 2013 – Rolla, MO – On June 11 Brewer Science participated in Missouri State University’s Missouri Innovation Academy (MIA) by providing MIA students with the opportunity to experience a day in the life of inventors, scientists, engineers, and other technologists. As part of their MIA activities, these students experienced a “boot camp” on the Brewer Science campus that offered a unique combination of equipment and processes rarely found anywhere else in the world.
Since its inception, the Missouri Innovation Academy has reached more than 200 students, and for the last 7 years, Brewer Science has been an integral part of this inspirational experience. This 3-week camp targets Missouri’s brightest high school sophomores and juniors who are interested in science, innovation, and entrepreneurship. The MIA students typically spend one full day at Brewer Science, engaged in workshops and hands-on learning experiences. Dr. Terry Brewer, president and founder of Brewer Science, traditionally greets the students and conducts a question-and-answer session.
“Keep your perception open and learn from others,” Dr. Brewer told this year’s boot camp students. “Ask questions and avoid drawing conclusions. Asking the question can sometimes be more important than the answer.” Dr. Brewer also said, “As an innovator of creative materials needed for manufacturing cutting-edge microelectronic devices, Brewer Science is a strong advocate for learning and innovation. We are delighted to provide students with the opportunity to learn and experience something new.”

- Converting Your Great Idea Into a Business
This year’s speakers advocated blending science and innovation with business to transform ideas into viable products. Guest lecturer John Woodson, Program Specialist with the Missouri Small Business and Technology Development Center, presented an overview of successful business practices entitled “Entrepreneurship 101.” Also, Kirk Nash, owner of Nash Immersive, shared his experiences as an entrepreneur and provided a demonstration on augmented reality.
Brewer Science has a long history of supporting education and learning. Recent recipients of such support include a program providing science teachers to classrooms in Tenede, Africa; the Dr. Norman E. Dobson Memorial Scholarship; the IEEE Foundation – Frances B. Hugle Memorial Scholarship; the Ozarks Science and Engineering Fair; the MS&T Solar Car Team; the MS&T Solar House Team; and the Rolla High School Patriots Robotics Team.
