Technology Innovator Recognized as Patron of the Arts
November 21, 2013 – Dr. Terry Brewer, President and founder of Brewer Science, has been selected by the Missouri Arts Council to be the recipient of the 2014 Missouri Arts Award for Philanthropy, the state’s highest honor to individuals and institutions that have made profound and lasting contributions to the cultural and artistic landscape of Missouri.
Although usually associated with his company’s innovations in the microelectronics industry, Dr. Brewer has always incorporated artistic creativity into the company’s culture. As Brewer Science has expanded its successful portfolio of technology products and processes, the company’s support for the arts has also flourished. The 2014 Missouri Arts Award for Philanthropy recognizes Dr. Brewer’s contributions to the arts at both the regional and the international level.
Brewer Science is well known in the region as an avid supporter of artistic endeavors and frequently hosts regional art exhibits and events, in addition to prominently displaying artistic works throughout its facilities. In the past year alone, Dr. Brewer has underwritten dramatic performances at Leach Theatre and Ozark Actors Theatre; musical performances including the Peaceful Bend Wine Cellar Concert and programs by the Rolla Town Band, musicians playing traditional Chinese instruments, and the Rolla Choral Arts Society; and fine arts exhibitions in Rolla and Springfield, MO. According to Dr. Jerry Cohen, Vice-President of Arts Rolla, “Dr Brewer’s attitude of sharing his joy of the arts exemplifies what he has done with his life. He continues to give everyone he can reach an appreciation for and enjoyment of the arts. Dr. Brewer has been quoted as saying, ‘Creativity is the common thread intricately binding art and science together,’ and his life is a testimony to that sentiment.”
In addition to promoting regional appreciation for the arts, Dr. Brewer has increased international awareness of Missouri’s artistic creativity, and international business associates frequently receive gifts of Missouri artwork commissioned by Dr. Brewer. Through his interest and support, the production and reputation of Missouri’s artists has been extended into international circles. Stephanie Cramer, Director of Programs and Exhibitions, Springfield Regional Arts Council, notes that “As the owner and president of a global company, Dr. Brewer has taken the opportunity to influence both local and global attitudes on the importance of art in a world of ever-increasing technology. His actions confirm the importance that he places on valuing and celebrating the artistic spirit. His generous support of art and artists extends beyond our local community to touch people around the world. “
Upon learning of the award conferred upon him, Dr. Brewer said, “It is truly an honor to receive this recognition. I’m pleased to support the arts and innovation in a way that inspires the employees at Brewer Science and in a way that adds opportunities to our region. I believe sharing through the arts tears down perceived barriers and enables us to experience another’s perspective, thus expanding our vision and perception. Encouraging and supporting visual, literary, and performing art enriches our world and leads to personal growth.”
Dr. Terry Brewer will be presented with the 2014 Missouri Arts Award for Philanthropy at a special ceremony on February 5, 2014, in the Capitol Rotunda in Jefferson City, MO. Others recognized by the Missouri Arts Council for their contribution to the arts include Margaret Meg Bourne Hulsey for Art Education, University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance for Arts Organization, City of Kansas City for Creative Community, Sabra Tull Meyer for Individual Artist, and Peter Sargent for Leadership in the Arts. Award recipients were selected from public nominations by an independent panel of distinguished Missouri citizens representing arts communities throughout the state.
