April 15, 2014 – Dr. Terry Brewer, president and founder of Brewer Science, was selected by the University of North Texas (UNT) Alumni Selection Committee to be the recipient of the 2014 Distinguished Alumni Award, one of the university’s most prestigious awards. He was presented with the award at a special ceremony on April 11, 2014, at UNT. The award recognizes alumni for distinguished professional achievement that has merited the honor and praise of peers and colleagues as well as for significant contributions alumni have made to society and in service to their fellow man.
Dr. Terry Brewer (’65, ’70 Ph.D.) earned bachelor’s and doctoral degrees in chemistry from UNT. University officials praised his contributions to technology and service in his distinguished career.
“Terry Brewer is one of our most distinguished and successful alumni,” said Warren Burggren, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs for UNT. “He has parlayed his UNT training into a major scientific corporation but, more importantly, remembers his roots and is eager to give back to UNT in a way that supports and encourages our students to follow in his distinctive footsteps. This extraordinary recognition from UNT is highly deserved and will likely inspire a new generation of young UNT entrepreneurs.”

Dr. Brewer founded Brewer Science in 1981 to commercialize his invention of anti-reflective coatings (ARC® materials). His creation of anti-reflective coatings forever changed the landscape of microtechnology and enabled manufacturers of technology products to make their devices smaller and more efficient. The company's in-depth knowledge and expertise in materials science, chemistry, physics, optics, modeling, and process integration distinguish it from all other material suppliers worldwide and has allowed Brewer Science to bring innovative products and processes to the global marketplace.
Under the leadership of Dr. Brewer, Brewer Science has grown to be an international company with offices located around the globe in North America, Europe, and Asia.
Dr. Brewer serves as a member of the SEMI North America Advisory Board. He is a founding member of the Jordan Valley Innovation Center (JVIC) and serves on the board of Springfield Innovation, Inc. Dr. Brewer is a strong advocate for economic development, job creation, education, and the arts. He serves on many related boards and committees.
During his career, Dr. Brewer has been an inventor for a number of patents and has authored multiple technical and business publications. Under his leadership, Brewer Science has successfully commercialized many government-sponsored technologies and is actively consulted by our government leaders for guidance regarding U.S. advanced technology, manufacturing, and small business development policies.
In addition to the Distinguished Alumni Award from UNT, Dr. Brewer recently received an award for Philanthropy by the Missouri Arts Council. Earlier this year, Brewer Science was recognized as one of the Top 50 Employers by Minority Engineer magazine. Brewer Science also has received recognition from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch as a Top Workplace in 2012 and 2013. Top Workplace designations are awarded to companies with outstanding leadership, communication, career opportunities, work environment, managerial skills, pay, and benefits. In 2013, Brewer Science was recognized with the Flag of Freedom Award from the Missouri Department of Economic Development for the company’s commitment to consider Missouri veterans for employment through the State of Missouri Show-Me-Heroes program.
