This brings up the issue of environmental impact. CMP is a relatively dirty process, generating large volumes of contaminated water. It is a large particle generator within the confines of the fab. Both of these factors conspire to make CMP a heavy impact on the environment, not only of the earth, but of the manufacturing facility itself. Most CMP operations are segregated from the main part of the fab to reduce the chance of contamination.
