Abstract: Brewer Science’s vision is to design, build, and deploy connected gas and water sensors that quantitatively monitor environmental contaminants on a large scale. For the last decade, Brewer Science has pioneered the development of materials and technology to print cost-effective sensors capable of measuring contaminants in water, such as heavy metals (lead, cadmium), copper, calcium, magnesium, nitrate, pH, and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP). Additionally, our sensors assess air quality by detecting gases like carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and oxygen.

Our state-of-the-art fabrication processes include physical vapor deposition (PVD) sputtering, screen printing, stencil printing, ink-jet printing, spray coating, and high-speed jet dispensing. These techniques allow us to produce low-cost sensors with low-power electronics and wireless communication capabilities, enabling widespread deployment for real-time environmental monitoring.

To realize our vision of cost-effective environmental sensors, the electronics industry must advance additively manufactured electronics (AME). Brewer Science is at the forefront of overcoming challenges in developing printable functional inks, especially electrically non-conductive materials. While significant progress has been made in conductive inks for applications like membrane switches and RFID tags, the next frontier lies in developing new printable materials such as low-loss dielectrics, porous membranes, ion-selective membranes, optical materials, and environmental protection layers.
