The current spin-coating process
The current process involves three basic steps – dispense, spin, and dry. Within those three steps, multiple factors can affect the coating process, including:

Today we can only monitor the data at specific intervals during the spin-coating process – for example, when the wafer is not moving. Unfortunately, most defects typically occur when the wafer is in motion.
Why real-time monitoring will help
As the industry demands more consistency and efficiency, real-time data monitoring will allow us to identify when defects occur. One of the most common defects in spin coating is a striation – the development of a thick ridge during the spin-coating process. Because coated layers need to be uniform and flat, knowing the exact moment a defect occurs not only helps determine its root cause but also allows the user to develop a solution and increases the overall efficiency of the process.
